Time-varying Azimuth Discrimination and Resynthesis: a New Method for Music Repurposing

By extracting one or more instruments from one piece of music and mixing them with instruments from another, a professional DJ is able to create a new, ”remixed” music track. As a result, there has been a growing need for instrument-only tracks fueled by amateur DJs wanting to mix their own music. In this paper, we discuss an algorithm for improving upon a previous method of separating instrument tracks from a piece of music. We also discuss how effective the previous separation is compared to this improved method by introducing a Euclidean-based wavelet distance metric. Lastly, we illustrate how sound separation can be used to remix arbitrary tracks of music without having the individual instruments a priori.
